Considering that its not wildly supported yet I don't see the rush to support it on a player, but I don't see why Sony couldn't add support for it in the future through a firmware patch (Panasonic did for their player) since the PS3 does decoding on a software level.

Just speaking for myself: discounting the PSgrill for admittedly obvious economic reasons, I would and do still prefer a standalone player for one very specific reason: analog outputs. Which you need if you have a TV with a DVI input and route your sound through the TV, which I do (I should probably turn in my AV geek card).
