Default Black screen with Gf4 420 Go and 96.39

The situation is as following: I've just installed Ubuntu 7.04 on my old Vaio Notebook and am now trying to install the graphics driver for its Gf4 420 Go card. Well, if I take the driver from the Ubuntu repositories there is an error an running "glxgears" or any other OpenGL application:

Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual

The module "glx" is mentioned in the xorg.conf, but it can't be loaded, an excerpt from my xorg.0.log:

(II) LoadModule: "GLX"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module GLX
(II) UnloadModule: "GLX"
(EE) Failed to load module "GLX" (module does not exist, 0)

If I install the 96.39 driver from the nVidia homepage, after entering the X-Server the screen is completely black. There is no error and Ubuntu is running normally, I even hear the sound when I log in, but I don't see anything. ^^ What can I do in this situation?

Thanks,

Photon

I'd suggest reading all the sticky posts:

Well, here are my xorg.0.log and my nvidia-installer.log if you mean this. Unfortunately I don't find any nvidia-bug-report.log file, maybe because I've run the nvidia-bug-report.sh wrongly. The strange thing is that there are no errors when X starts, simply a black screen.

Try adding the following option to the Device section of xorg.conf:
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"
