Hi group,
My goal is to get use my TV-OUT feature of my Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. The video card is GeForce4 440 Go (rev a3) as reported by /sbin/lspci -vvv All references to using the TV-OUT feature say I must use the nvidia driver. I cannot find any reference to getting this to work with any drivers that come with the kernel. I built my own kernel from source. When I run the build script for 1.0.9755 I get the following messages: The NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go GPU installed in this system is supported through the NVIDIA 1.0-96xx legacy Linux graphics drivers. Please visit... The 1.0-9755 NVIDIA Linux graphics driver will ignore this GPU. and... You do not appear to have an NVIDIA GPU supported by the 1.0-9755 NVIDIA Linux graphics driver installed in this system. For further details... The build eventually fails with: FATAL: modpost: GPL-incompatible module nvidia.ko uses GPL-only symbol 'paravirt_ops' nvidia.ko failed to build! I have tried adding the TV-OUT options to my xorg.conf file but my logs show that they are ignored meaning those options are not supported by the kernel I'm currently using. So, here are my questions (unless someone sees an obvious error on my part): 1. Do any stock kernel drivers support this card for TV-OUT? 2. Is there a kernel build option I may have used that prevents this driver from building? 3. Is the 1.0.9755 nvidia driver for linux expected to build on such a new kernel? Please advise. Thanks. |

You need to use a kernel which does not have the GPL-only symbol 'paravirt_ops'. This is not a driver bug.

OK I recompiled my kernel with the CONFIG_PARAVIRT option off and now here is the error I get when trying to run the nvidia 1.0.9755 build script:
NVIDIA: left KBUILD. -> done. -> Kernel module compilation complete. ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s). Please see the log entries 'Kernel module load error' and 'Kernel messages' at the end of the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for more information. -> Kernel module load error: insmod: error inserting './usr/src/nv/nvidia.ko': -1 No such device -> Kernel messages: nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel. NVRM: The NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go GPU installed in this system is NVRM: supported through the NVIDIA 1.0-96xx Legacy drivers. Please NVRM: visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html for more NVRM: information. The 1.0-9755 NVIDIA driver will ignore NVRM: this GPU. Continuing probe... NVRM: No NVIDIA graphics adapter found! ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver download page at www.nvidia.com. I'm not sure why it says that no NVIDIA graphics adapter was found. I have downloaded and installed the nvidia driver from nvidia.com many times in the past and ran it with no problem. Additionally, /sbin/lspci shows the model. Am I missing something? Thanks. |

Your GPU is not supported by 1.0-9755:

OK I'm able to build the 1.0.9639 driver when when I use the nvidia xorg.conf configuration tool and startx, I get a blank screen
![]() I'll have to make some time to figure out what changes in the xorg.conf other than the driver name in order to work with this video card. I'm also mildly curious why the 1.0.9755 driver will not work. Not backwards compatible? Also, I'd like to see the driver for this card included in the kernel to avoid this kind of stuff but I guess that's asking a bit too much. Thanks. |

Please follow the instructions in http://nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678
Support for your GPU was dropped in the 1.0-97xx driver series because it's too old. See http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html for a list of which GPUs are supported in which legacy driver series. |
