Default The "NVRM: Xid ..." problem

Hello nVidia
I've noticed that many linux users have a similar problem
so my problem is:
when I run quake3 it freezes in the first few seconds in the gameplay
it stands frozen for 10-20 seconds and gets unfrozen for 1-2 seconds and than again freezes for 10-20 seconds and again unfreezes for 1-2 seconds and this repeats forever
but it never crashes (it's FreeBSD of course, not linux )
anyway when I quit the game I can see the fallowing in /usr/log/messages

May 29 19:29:14 e-soul kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 30, L1 -> L0
May 29 19:29:30 e-soul kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000002
May 29 19:29:30 e-soul kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 30, L1 -> L0
May 29 19:29:53 e-soul kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000002
May 29 19:29:53 e-soul kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 30, L1 -> L0
May 29 19:30:16 e-soul kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000002
May 29 19:30:16 e-soul kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 30, L1 -> L0
May 29 19:30:40 e-soul kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 00000002
May 29 19:30:40 e-soul kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 30, L1 -> L0

this makes me MAD because I love to play quake3
so I had the same problem before 1-2 months...
let me start from the begining...
I've installed FreeBSD somewhen...and installed nvidia-driver too and everything was fine and was playing quake3 without any problems
but when the new version of gettext apeared I had to upgrade most of my packages and after upgradeing them this problem apeared...
I've tried many things to solve it but with no success including removing of all xorg related packages and compiling them again
the last chance was to reinstall FreeBSD
so I did it
and after clean install it worked
the problem was gone...
but now I've upgraded to xorg 7.2 and this problem apeared again!

my hardware is:
motherboard: ASUS P4P800SE
videocard: GF FX5500

my software is:
FreeBSD-6.2-STABLE
xorg 7.2
latest nvidia-driver from ports

does anyone know what is this problem caused from ?
thank you

Which AGP GART driver are you using, FreeBSD's AGPGART or the builtin NVIDIA NvAGP driver? Does this problem reproduce if you disable AGP (see the README for details)?

I'm not sure
I have
device agp
in my kernel
and I've compiled nvidia-driver with the fallowing options:

FREEBSD_AGP "Use FreeBSD AGP GART driver"
ACPI "Enable support for ACPI Power Management"
LINUX "Build with support for Linux compatibility"

and I have the falloing in my xorg.conf

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "* Generic VGA compatible"
Monitor "ViewSonic"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "NvAGP"
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 8
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 16
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection

I've just tried to comment out the
Option NvAGP
but this caused worse performance in the quake3 menu and the same freezes in the gameplay

do you have any ideas about this problem ?

thank you

With FREEBSD_AGP and NvAGP set to 2, you will be using the FreeBSD AGP GART driver; this is not recommended. Please try rebuilding without this option and re-try with NvAGP set to 1 and 0, respectively.

OK, I've tried and the effect was less freezes
but still freezing every 1-2 minutes
do you have any idea where the problem is ?

If the problem persists with NvAGP set to 0, it'd be good if you checked the system's RAM (e.g. with memtest86+), the GPU fan, etc..

It seems that was overheating as you said, so I've replaced the cooler with a new better one. The old cooler was clogged with dust. The problem is gone. My video card works. Btw what is the recommended value for NvAGP ?

thank you

It is recommended that you use the builtin NvAGP driver, if possible (Option "NvAGP" "1"); please see http://us.download.nvidia.com/freebs...ppendix-h.html for more information.
