have you taken a look at this post.
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490

- first you need to install the build-essentials which includes
development tools like make and gcc.
sudo apt-get install build-essential

- Then you should install the linux-headers package matching the installed Linux kernel.
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic #If you use generic kernel

you can look which kernel is in use with the following command

uname -r

it should print something like that
2.6.20-16-generic

- Then install the following packages
sudo apt-get install pkg-config
sudo apt-get install xsverver-xorg-dev

- Uninstall all nvidia drivers that are installed from ubuntu.
You have to look which driver is installed so I give you an example how this command could look like.
sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-glx

If I am right there is a nvidia-glx-new package, but you have to take a look what is installed.

- change permission of the Nvidia-installer.
chmod 777 NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run

Now you have to switch to console, by pressing strg+alt+F1

login and then stop current gdm

sudo invoke-rc.d gdm stop

install the driver.

$ sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run

If installation is complete you should take a look at your xorg.conf

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Change the driver to nvidia
The Device Section should look like this.

Section "Device"
Identifier "Geforce 6200"
Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

save and exit nano.

now you could start gdm
sudo invoke-rc.d gdm start

Now everything should work.

hope this helps.

vmware provides it's own virtualized video card to the guest operating systems running on it. You may physically have an nvidia card in your box, but the guest operating systems don't have access to it.

The change file permission thing can be done in Kubuntu 7.04 x86_64?
Because its the system I have right now with a NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS AGP.
about vmware, i have it installed in my system. do I have to purge it to make nvidia drivers work?
Thanks!

If you try to install the nvidia driver in a Virtual Machine, you will have no luck.

See what Adam wrote.

p.s. I uninstalled the drivers with Synaptics and had no problems so far.

During install I received a warning about the following library being unable to be verified:

/usr/lib32/libGL.so.100.14.11

It stated that it was assumed working though. I received this message after saying yes to the request to install the 32-bit compatibility libraries. This is on a fresh install of Ubuntu 7.04 x64, no updates or additional packages installed.

All appears to be working, but I thought I would still submit this for future reference.

Exclamation Re: Nvidia driver with ubuntu.

FYI there is a but with the nvidia-glx-new in Ubuntu

See here :

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...t=93008&page=2

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...20/+bug/106217

The bottom line is not only do you need to purge the nvidia-new-glx you also need to :

Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-glx-new
sudo rm /lib/linux-restricted-modules/.nvidia.new.installed
Otherwise you will get an error message :

Quote:
Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has the version 1.0-9755, but this X module has the version 1.0-9631. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version.

*Obviously the version information varies with which driver you are installing.

*I know this information is in these forums, but I though I would add the information to this thread as well
