100.14.11 screen resolution problems
Hullo. I have a 7800GS (AGP) on an Athlon 64 box, under Gentoo. With older version of the driver (1.0-9*) everything worked fine, but with the latest driver, I am noticing some odd behaviour related to setting the screen resolution.
What I want, and what I used to be able to get, is a virtual screen size of 1280x1024, but higher screen resolutions - namely 1600x1200 - available to switch to, for full-screen games and the like. With the latest driver, I have been unable to do this at all, despite fiddling at great length with modes and meta-modes.
At the moment, I have finally convinced X that it should start with a screen resolution of 1280x1024, but the default virtual screen size is 1600x1200 (I can pan around in GDM). OpenGL applications cannot switch to 1600x1200 when running full-screen (Nexuiz crashes; Doom 3 changes size but not resolution - so I cannot see the menu bar along the bottom, for example).
My Xorg log clearly shows that the driver considers 1600x1200 to be the default virtual screen size, despite having listed "1280x1024" first in the modes line for all colour depths. Meta-modes and dynamic TwinView are currently disabled; re-enabling the latter doesn't help with resolution switching.
The final output of nexuiz-sdl when trying to switch to 1600x1200 is as follows:
VID_Restart: changing from fullscreen 1280x1024x32bpp, to fullscreen 1600x1200x32bpp. OpenGL Backend shutting down Video: fullscreen 1600x1200x32x60hz Linked against SDL version 1.2.11 Using SDL library version 1.2.11 X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 135 (XFree86-VidModeExtension) Minor opcode of failed request: 10 (XF86VidModeSwitchToMode) Value in failed request: 0x1a5 Serial number of failed request: 145 Current serial number in output stream: 147
