Default Color depth issue when using TNT2 with ViewSonic VA1730wb LCD Monitor

Hi,

This is my first post here. I recently bought a ViewSonic VA1703wb LCD monitor. I made the right changes for making it show the recommended resolution (1440x900) but I can't find out how to make it show 24 bit colors. It works up to 16 bit colors. Color depth is the same when choosing 24 or 16. I'm using a Riva TNT2 Model 64/64 Pro with 32mb RAM.

I suspect there's some kind of communication error between the TNT2 card and the monitor because xwininfo says color depth is 24 but monitor shows up to 16. I checked this monitor with an iBook G4 and colors were OK. I also checked the TNT2 with an old CRT monitor and also colors were OK.

I'm using the latest legacy driver (1.0.7184). These are some of the more relevant lines of xorg.conf:

EndSubSection

Here's Xorg.0.log file. According to this log, driver treat monitor like a CRT one.

I'll really appreciate any kind of help. Thank you very much in advance,

Luis Pablo

Unhappy Re: Color depth issue when using TNT2 with ViewSonic VA1730wb LCD Monitor

I happen to have the same card, go figure. It will not support 24 bit at 1280x1024. 1440x900 I don't know specifically but I doubt it supports that res at 24 bit

Xwininfo reports the video card is delivering 24 bit but the monitor just don't display that color depth. Look at this:

xwininfo: Window id: 0xc00003 "Panel lateral expandido inferior"

Absolute upper-left X: 0
Absolute upper-left Y: 875
Relative upper-left X: 0
Relative upper-left Y: 875
Width: 1440
Height: 25
Depth: 24
Visual Class: TrueColor
Border width: 0
Class: InputOutput
Colormap: 0x20 (installed)
Bit Gravity State: NorthWestGravity
Window Gravity State: NorthWestGravity
Backing Store State: NotUseful
Save Under State: no
Map State: IsViewable
Override Redirect State: no
Corners: +0+875 -0+875 -0-0 +0-0
-geometry 1440x25+0-0

I checked with 1024x768 resolution and I'm still unable to get 24 bit colors.

Hi,

I was wrong, the TNT2 is delivering 24 bit colors but the problem is they don't look in the way they should do it. Colors look like washed or lacking contrast. This is easily noticeable with Firefox and most applications. I tried unsuccessfully to solve this by changing the monitor parameters.

I checked with an old SIS 6326 8mb and colors were right but there was other issues.

Is there somebody using LCD monitors with TNT2 cards?

Thank you very much in advance,

Luis Pablo
