Default 100.14.11 / Fedora 7 / x86_64 on AMD Athlon X2 3600 Troublesome

The mentioned configuration results in occasional hangs when running doom3 (which is 32bit). Also after every reboot an ldconfig is needed to make doom3 run at all - otherwise the screen goes black on startup of doom. The latter may be a livna packaging problem of the 32bit libs for the 100.14.11 driver.

I rebooted the machine back into Fedora core 6 / i686, which is more stable. The driver however seems to to expose short freezes during gameplay (which I noticed on FC7/x86_64 as well). Earlier 96xx drivers didn't seem to expose these freezes.

So, how to proceed? What further information is needed?

Can't really help you but since I run F7/64/AMD thought I'd chime in with a couple of thoughts.

* Check the last "sticky", i.e., "If you have a problem...". The NV folks aren't inclined to help without hard info. (understandable) They need that verbose bug report to see what's going on.

* Have you posted this in fedoraforum? This may well be (as you noted) a distro/repo issue. FireWing has done wonders lately with V/C driver interface in Fedora. Most likely he'll jump right on this.

Good luck.

Now it all seens to run steady:

* downgraded: nvidia-96xx (this release has no 15 second freezes at random moments)
* installed: SDL., SDL_image, SDL_mixer, mesa-libGLU (all i386)

doom3, quake 4 etc all run fine now. I'm not sure if I fully got rid op the occasional hang of these games when going to full-screen but it's very rare now.

About the occasional hang during startup of the games: this seems to be caused by the xterm from which i start the games. If the games hang strace show that they hang on a write to stdout...which is the xterm. When I run these games windowed and the hang occurs during startup, all I have to do is click with the mouse in the starting xterm. In the xterm the regular startup messages of the game continue, and the game itself runs fine.

Solutions: start the games from the menu, or redirect stderr/stdout to /dev/null or a file.
