Default nvidia-settings not working

Hi,

I run Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and recently upgraded my old nvidia card to a brand new 7600 GS. I downloaded the 100.14.11 linux driver but I had trouble getting it to work. I eventually gave up trying the official way and used Envy and now almost everything seems to work!

The problem is nvidia-settings pops up a window claiming "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. "

I did that, too, but no change.

I AM running the nvidia driver, I get the NVIDIA splashscreen on boot, and glxinfo output shows (among other things) the new card:

When I run nvidia-settings -V=ALL I get:
Code:
WARNING: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this Display.
WARNING: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA GPUs on ':0.0'.
WARNING: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA Frame Lock Devices on ':0.0'.
WARNING: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA VCSCs on ':0.0'.
nvidia-settings -g outputs nothing. (that is why I included the glxinfo output earlier)

nvidia-settings -v says:
Code:
nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder3) Wed Jun 13 18:40:26 PDT 2007
The NVIDIA X Server Settings tool.
This program is used to configure the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver.

I've attached the output of nvidia-bug-report, but one odd thing I notice is it includes the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, which for some reason makes reference to my old card. But there is another file (Xorg.93.log) on my system which references my current card, so I've attached it as well.

I don't know why, but ps axf shows that Xgl starts Xorg with :93 on the command line, so I assume it must be right. As far as I can tell, all programs and games (like flightgear) are running fine on the new card.

I don't know enough about how Xorg works to be able to purge all references to my old card (assuming this is what is causing the problem). Nor how to force the new driver to use xserver :0 instead of :93 (if that is the problem). If I edit xorg.conf to use the 'nv' driver instead of 'nvidia', then xserver fails to come up and I have no graphics at all. I have tried uninstalling, re-installing, reconfiguring, etc. with and without Envy, but I keep coming back to this point. I am running out of ideas.

Please help.

Xgl does not support the NV-CONTROL extension, which nvidia-settings needs to communicate with the NVIDIA X driver.

All right, so what do I do then? Is there a way to run nvidia-settings at all?

Use Nvidia Composite Extensions with xorg instead Xgl.
