I have ubuntu 7.04 with kernel 2.6.20-16-generic and I just added a 8600GT OC PCIe from bfg. It's a dual dvi card.
I installed 100.14.11 nvidia drivers and once X starts, all I get is a black screen with the cursor in the left corner. There's nothing in the Xorg.0.log file either. I've attached my bug report. I've also made sure all the ubuntu nvidia packages are not present via the package manager. As well as following the instructions here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490 Everything works fine if I use the nv driver instead of nvidia in my xorg.conf file. |

I am not sure but at line 810 in your "nvidia-bug-report.log" stands Code:
-> Runtime sanity check failed.
ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions
on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
driver download page at www.nvidia.com.
Maybe this thread helps you to reinstall the driver. http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=94072 best wishes Mr.A |

Thanks for the reply.
The error in the nvidia log file was: ERROR: The runtime configuration check failed for the library 'libnvidia-tls.so.100.14.11' (expected: '/usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1', found: '/usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1'). The most likely reason for this is that conflicting OpenGL libraries are installed in a location not inspected by `nvidia-installer`. Please be sure you have uninstalled any third-party OpenGL and/or third-party graphics driver packages. -> done. I read in a post that someone had this error, but was able to ignore it and the drivers still worked for them. I checked the date/time on them, and they're both put there by the nvidia driver. Why would the driver put them there, and then complain about them??? I've also tried all the suggestions in your post (remove the other packages, hidden files, reinstalled numerous times). |

If it is so, maybe someone else has a suggestion. The only thing you could do is to try a clean ubuntu installation, if nobody else has a suggestion. best wishes Mr.A |

if I do a modprobe nvidia, I don't get any errors. And when I actually startx with nvidia in my xorg.conf, I don't get any errors either.

Had the same problem.
used the apt-get remove <module> --purge as suggested in this thread: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490 but I also did an "apt-get remove nvidia-kernel-common --purge" when I ran the installer, it complained about not being able to create "/lib/modules/`uname -a`/volatile/nvidia.ko for copying (no such file or directory)" BUT X has started just fine and when I run glxgears (i have a GeForce 7800 GS) I get 15K FPS! Sweet. |

thanks for the input. I've already done that as well and still get the same error. I can't be the only one who has had this problem, can I? :-)

well I fixed it. What I did was remove the symbolic link under /usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1 and changed it to point to /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1
Beats me why these libs are installed by the installer, and they were of different file sizes. Come on Nvidia, what gives? Why install 2 libs? |
