In this case, i suggest selling the 8600GTS and purchasing another 7600GS:
Interesstingly, there are currently very few applications that benefit from
the higher performance of the 8xxx-series cards - a 7300GT is almost as
fast as an 8800GTX for UT2K4 or ET. There are only notable differences
when doing the SPECviewperf ...

Well, not *that* critical.

Is it just that they are too different? If so, I think the documentation should be updated to reflect this can destroy support on all screens.

My experience is that when mixing a 7800GTX with a 8800GTX all
3D is lost, while a 6600 works without any problems alongside
a 7800GTX. BTW.: I then replaced the 6600 with another 7800GTX but
the performance gain was hardly recognizable - the situation is that
most games available on Linux are more CPU cycle consuming
rather then GPU centric. So any nvidia GPU not older than two
years should be good enough. This migth certainly be different
for modern games on windows or when you have custom application
making use of the advanced shader capabilities. However, the
situation may dramaticaly change when UT3 is published, early
Novemeber :-)

It would be helpful if somebody in this forum could confirm
that he/she got 3D running on one screen with a mixed 7 and 8 series
cards Xinerama setup. Then we know that something is wrong or missing
in your configuration. But it looks like that the docs are simply wrong
on that topic ...
