9639 does not support the new driver ABI. If you look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, you should see a message similar to this one:
Code:
============= WARNING WARNING WARNING WARNING ============= This server has a video driver ABI version of 2.0 but this driver is designed to work with versions before 2.0. Please check http://www.nvidia.com/ for driver updates or downgrade to an X server with a supported driver ABI. =========================================================== Support for the new ABI will be available in future releases. |

No, there's no workaround short of modifying the X server.
