Default Vertical green lines on Laptop LCD - GeForce Go 7200

Please don't reply by saying "file a bug report", I think that this is a problem with defective hardware.

OK...

Here's my story...

I bought a laptop from HP online (HP dv6000z). It has an nVidia GeForce Go 7200. When I bought it, I installed Linux, and the Linux driver, and kept it up to date.

Once the driver was past 1.0-96xx, I had some minor stability issues. However, I believe that this was a coincidence, because I had the same problems in Windows, and my WiFi card fried.

I sent the laptop back to HP, and received my replacement. My replacement, however, had a couple of the plastic panels were loose. When I turned the laptop on, I got some green vertical lines that were "buzzing" on the screen, with my mouse pointer. Shortly thereafter, the laptop bluescreened. I then did the HP restore thing, and it seemed to fix the problem (factory drivers & whatnot). I then installed Linux and the nVidia drivers, but had the same problem, so I sent it back. I never had this problem before I sent the laptop back.

I just received the laptop again, and HP claimed to fix the video with "software." However, after installing Linux, as well as the nVidia drivers, I have the same problem. The problem does not show up until I install the binary drivers from nvidia.com.

I can't seem to reproduce the problem on Windows, so either the driver in Windows isn't providing accelleration, or the driver in Linux is doing something screwy.

Can someone tell me whether these problems are an issue with my drivers or my hardware?

If you think this is a hardware problem, then you should report it to HP. Barring that, you need to follow the instructions in the sticky posts on how to seek assistance with a problem.

Thanks,
Lonni

I have almost the same laptop (HP DV6276eu) and I have this same problem
using Mandriva spring 2007.After a while the machine stops responding to any input from mouse or keyboard while these green lines flicker on and off in the dark parts of the screen. Also each icon on the desktop screen is slightly corrupted.
I don't think it's a hardware fault,as this card works fine under Vista and XP...
<edit> I have included the "xorg.conf"-file plus the nvidea bug report file...

It looks like NVidea does not care much about their linuxdriver for this particular card.Recently I have tried Sabayon Linux 3.4 Live which has already a driver for nvidea cards.Still the same problem:
At times an unresponsive system, corrupted icons, and
those very same green lines...

Have you verified that you're using the latest released BIOS?

This card is working fine under XP and Vista, why should I take the risk
of "destroying" my computer during a BIOS-flash? If no BIOS update is needed for XP and Vista why is that necessary for Linux?

Linux interacts with the BIOS in a completely different fashion than Windows. Comparing the two is not a valid comparison. If you'd like further assistance, please update to the latest BIOS, and retest.

Ok, I took the risk updating the BIOS.
No more green lines,I think the problem is solved.
Thank you !
