Default xorg at 100%, depending on display

I have this odd problem when I play movies using mplayer (it's the only time that I've noticed it). When I play with my TV as a display (connected via HDMI) xorg hogs 100% of a CPU. When I use an LCD monitor (connected via DVI->VGA converter) xorg behaves.

I've attached two nvidia log files, one with the TV as a display, while playing a video and the other with the monitor as the display. In both instances I shutdown the machine, connected one of the displays and restarted it, logged in and played the movie. I'm running an up-to-date version of Ubuntu Gutsy, with an svn version of mplayer.

Thanks in advance.

I played around with nvidia-settings and found that if I disable GPU scaling (Force Full GPU Scaling under Flat Panel Scaling), then this problem goes away. Does that make sense? Why would xorg need so much more CPU with scaling turned on?
