Default PNY 8600 GTS/Fedora 7 - x fails to start with 100.14.11 driver

I'm very new to Linux, so bear with me and my inexperience.

-----

I'm not really sure where to start.

When trying to startx, I get a blank screen for a few seconds, followed by it going back to the command line with the errors shown in the log file. Namely:

(WW) ****INVALID MEM ALLOCATION**** b: 0xce000000 e: 0xce000000 correcting

and the following which does not appear in the log

NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidia0 (Input/output error).

cat /dev/nvidia0 produces:
"cat: /dev/nvidia0: Input/ouput error"

xserver starts just fine using the nv driver. The card also works great under vista/xp/ME.

That's all I can think of atm - I'll be glad to provide whatever info possible.

System Specs:
Athlon X2 5400+
Biostar NF4U AM2G Motherboard (With latest bios update)
1G Crucial Ballistix RAM
eView 17f3 Monitor
1x PCI-E PNY 8600 GTS 256mb

In your bug report, I see:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:5:0:0.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please see the COMMON PROBLEMS section in the README for
(EE) NVIDIA(0): additional information.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource #3:2000000@fe000000 for 0000:05:00.0

This is a BIOS or kernel bug. Please follow the instructions above.

Thank you for the reply.

That was the first place I started trying to solve this problem, but I'm failing to find anything relevant (or that looks relevant) in the README, to the error(s) in the log.

I feel that I can assume it's not a kernel bug/problem, considering I know nothing of modifying the kernel, and I've run into the same exact problem running various distros all with default setups (that other people have no problems with). Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

If it is a BIOS problem, where would I start in finding the issue, and possibly fixing/working around it?

Again, thank you. I'm trying not to test anyones patience.

You'll need to start by verifying that you're using the latest motherboard BIOS.

Alright, I've double checked, although I upgraded the BIOS only a week ago, and it is up to date.

I've tried contacting Biostar (who I'm really beginning to despise), and they have yet to get back to me. They appear to not support linux in the least, so I doubt I'll get much from them, if anything.

Now:

Memory at fc000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
[11] -1 0 0xfc000000 - 0xfcffffff (0x1000000) MX[b](B)

Memory at b0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
[10] -1 0 0xb0000000 - 0xbfffffff (0x10000000) MX[b](B)

Memory at <ignored> (64-bit, non-prefetchable)
[9] -1 0 0xce000000 - 0xce000000 (0x1) MX[b](B)

Looking here, am I correct that these correspond to each other? If so, is the '64-bit, non-prefetchable' portion what (PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 3 of device 0000:05:00.0 and PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource #3:2000000@fe000000 for 0000:05:00.0) these are referring to?

I'm not sure where I'm going with this - I'm just trying to better understand what the issue is.

Is there any other information about the problem that I may find useful?

Again, thank you for any help whatsoever.

This error is the root of the problem:
PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 3 of device 0000:05:00.0 and PCI: Failed to allocate mem resource #3:2000000@fe000000 for 0000:05:00.0

You can try sending this upstream to the Fedora kernel folks to see if they're able to help resolve that error. If not, only Biostar can help you.

I just wanted to chime in with a me too here. I've got a near identical problem with my Biostar NF4U AM2G and my Gigabyte 8600 GT under both debian and gentoo (32 bit, 100.14.11 and 100.14.19).

I don't know if I have the energy to take the fight to Biostar

Hi,

I've got exactly the same problem (and error messages) with MSI K8N SLI Platinum motherboard with Gigabyte GeForce 8600GT (GV-NX86T256H) under Ubuntu 7.10. After installing ubuntu 7.10 everything works fine "out of the box" with the default nv driver but with no direct rendering. X doesn't start when I install Nvidia driver using various methods from entirely manual (after purging any restricted stuff provided by Ubuntu developers) to envy and Automatix2. As one might expect everything works fine under WinXp - full rendering available, no problems whatsoever.

apienkowski,
The issue that you're reporting doesn't have any similarities to what others have reported. I'd suggest starting a new thread after reading the forum sticky posts.
