Default Nvidia NVS series and efficent silent computing.

I have searched for this info before posting. If this has been discussed here before, please point me tot he link. Thanks in advance.

I need to replace my eVGA 7800 GTX PCIe card as I don't really partake in gaming anymore. I am looking for a silent and very energy efficient NVIDIA card for a mostly 2D Linux desktop; a machine that is on all day for research. When I say mostly I mean that the window manager is 2D (Openbox or DWM) and that the only 3D application that I foresee myself using is Google Earth. The card needs to drive 1600x1200 DVI LCD with an upgrade (sometime soon) to 1920x1200 DVI LCD.

My current research has led me to the NVIDIA NVS 285. Very inexpensive on eBay and fan less. Power consumption is listed at 18 watts max for PCIe 16x. The question that I can't find answered in the literature is whether this card will do any 3d at all.

So, if anyone can answer a few questions I would appreciate it:

Will the Quadro NVS cards do any sort of 3D?

Will I notice slower 2D performance compared to my brawny 7800GTX?

Where can I find power consumption figures for the GeForce line of cards? Why are they not listed on the NVDIA website when they are listed for the Quadro line cards?

Anyone here use the NVS line of cards for their Linux desktop machines?

Once again, thanks.

P.S. Anyone else concerned with energy efficiency in regards to 3D video cards?

Yes, if my card is any indication, the NVS cards can certainly do 3D. My laptops card (an NVS 120) has a geforce 7300-esque 3D engine which offers very reasonable performance. I can't imagine the NVS 285 could be that different.

The NVS 285 and its DMS-59 dual DVI cable arrived today. It was simply a matter of shutting down the machine and swapping cards. Upon reboot the Kill-a-Watt meter shows a thirty watt reduction in power --at idle-- consumed compared to the eVGA 7800GTX it replaced.

2d performance is great; no difference noticed from the 7800GTX. Can still use Google earth at a decent frame rate.

Total cost of card and cable was approx USD 12.00.
