Default Neverending grief with dual monitors..... Please Help!

Hi,

I am read to start crying for after hours and hours I am unable to get my pc with two monitors to work. I have 2 PC's with two monitors and setting them up in linux has given me grief without end. So far the only distro that was able to get two monitors running out of the box was Mandriva Spring 2007. Even the new Mandriva 2008 can't do it anymore

Now I installed Ubuntu 7.10 Gusty on my main PC, and thought I could easily configure my monitors with the new tool. I tried hundreds of times, but to no avail. Most of the time only one screen lights up with only part of the desktop showing, and I can scroll around it using my mouse

My actual setup is as folllows:

Main card: Nvidia Geforce 5900 XT AGP attached to Samsung SyncMaster 997MB

Second card: Nvidia Geforce 2 MX PCI attached to Dell P793

I have attached my current xorg.conf, as well as the one that Mandrive Spring 2007 has created and which worked for me.

I have tried all I can think of with and without the nvidia driver, Maybe someone else can help me.

Are you referring to the post that mentions that I should include the nvidia-bug-report? If, yes, sorry I thought it wouldn't be needed here, because I think this is not a bug per se but a configuration problem? Anyway here is the report. If you mean any other of the sticky's, please tell me which on.

Thanks

The problem is here:

(WW) NVIDIA(0): The NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 GPU installed in this system is
(WW) NVIDIA(0): supported through the NVIDIA 96.43.xx Legacy drivers.
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Please visit http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html for
(WW) NVIDIA(0): more information. The 100.14.23 NVIDIA driver will ignore
(WW) NVIDIA(0): this GPU. Continuing probe...

Ah, but what does this mean? For the FX i use the nvidia driver, for the 2 MX the nv driver, but what does:

No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:3:13:0) found

mean?

The card works fine on this bus ID with mandriva 2007 spring?

The last warning isn't the real issue. The problem is that you cannot run both cards with the same driver, and you cannot install multiple driver versions.

In other words, you cannot expect to use both cards simultaneously with the latest supported nvidia X driver.

Is it possible to run the second card with the open source driver provided with ubuntu? Or failing that, could I connect the second monitor to the DVI connector on the Geforce FX, and take the old MX card out of the PC. Just using the FX card to run the two monitors?

Yes, you can run two display devices per GPU. There is no requirement that you have two GPUs for two display devices (total). I'd suggest removing the Geforce 2 from the system, then running "nvidia-xconfig --twinview" (as root), and you should be all set.

I'm not sure if you could use 'nv' & 'nvidia' simultaneously.
