Judging by your install log for the nvidia.o thingy I'd say it never compiled properly...

It says
Quote:
ERROR: The kernel header file '/usr/include/linux/modversions.h' does not
exist. The most likely reason for this is that the kernel header files
in '/usr/include' have not been configured.
which mean that the source code for the kernel isn't installed or wasn't found, make sure there is a directory in /usr/src/ which says 2.4.something or other (2.4.20/2.4.21/2.4.18 or something along those lines) if you don't see a directory there with that stuff do a 'cat /proc/version' and get the source for your kernel from your distribution CD or www.kernel.org. Then install it. Then try to run X again.

-Travis

I just reread your post, for debian look here

Debian Kernel Source Packages

I just reread your post yet -again- and I am completely off base. Well sort of... check and make sure you have the source installed... Maybe I'm confused too. Definetly make sure you have the source installed, then maybe try pointing the installer to the right directory (it's an advanced commandline option) where the source is, then it -should-be happy.

IMHO, the best choice for kernel compiling is gcc 2.95
For a long time gcc 3.3 was unable to compile even vanilla kernel.
And I have problems on gcc 3.2.3 too.
And also, if your kernel in compiled with one version of gcc (look at /proc/version) nvidia drivers must also use it to compile. If you have 2 gcc versions in system, then you have to do something like this [b]export CC=gcc-2.95[b] before compiling modules.

PS: Whai distribution are you useing? AFAIK only debian unstable provides it for now...
