Ubuntu 7.10 6800XT HELP!!

I have installed the Ubuntu 7.10
I have download the driver http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...14.19-pkg2.run
and reboot to log in as root..
then with out login in to gnome I wrote to the console "./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.19-pkg2.run"
and installed the drivers
I wrote "startx -- -logverbose 6"
and the gnome started with full glx support
then I wrote to the terminal "nvidia-bug-report.sh"
and restarted the system

BUT.... when I restart the system and try to login, the x-enviroment restarts and request again to login..
even if I reboot the system and try to login in as root terminates the procedure and types this message
"fatal server error
caught signal 11.server aborting
xinit: connection to X server lost"
