hmm, do you use a x86_64/EM64T/AMD64 distro? Because _then_ you have to wait _forever_ for a workaround...
However you can download a x86 Livecd and run vbetool/vbetest there to get the vesa mode number...

I have a similar problem with a 8500GT which will not do any of 16:10 aspect ratios. (ie no 1680x1050 or 1280x800)

I only wish I new this before I bought this card. (I have 2 of them)
The specs say nothing about VESA modes. Now I am condemned to work with crappy consoles until i find a suitable card .

Unfortunately this mode is not available in the 8500GT bios.
Here is the output from vbetest from this card:

[326] 1600x1200 (5:6:5)
[330] 1600x1200 (8:8:8)
Type a mode number, or 'q' to quit -

I bought 2 of these cards a month ago and I feel as though I have been duped.
What is the use of all the MHz RAMDACs and the 100's of MB ram when it cannot do a simple framebuffer console with 16:10 aspect ratio? Its a con.
And how can one find a card that will do this when the manufacturers dont say in the specs what vesa modes their cards support?
