Default Defective card or driver solveable problem with two monitors ?

Some time ago had bought a 8600gt card with two dvi connectors, which worked fine with a single monitor connected on one dvi (iirc, didn't matter at which one). Problem comes as now tried to connect an vga monitor in addition to the dvi already had:

Can't get to use 2560x1024, always stays at 1280x1024

relevant xorg.conf settings regarding device (as was before testing to force dvi on the vga one):
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP,CRT"
Option "TwinView" "true"
Option "TwinViewOrientation" "RightOf"
Option "MetaModes" "DFP-0: 1280x1024, CRT-0: 1280x1024"

only on lastest test forcing treat vga as dvi (which should only give big desktop but no image though vga one. vga monitor is only here so card can detect it and get edid):
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP,DFP"
Option "MetaModes" "DFP-0: 1280x1024, DFP-1: 1280x1024"

On bootup (while bios controlling display) dvi0 always works, dvi1 always doesn't, regardless where plug the vga with adapter and where the dvi.

Haven't tried yet upgrading xserver drivers as dont have much time atm, screens not working properly while bios manages it either, and the weird way driver detects twice same monitor as both dfp and crt makes me suspect of the card itself.

Edit: Made clearer the configuration I was using, as before only copied from config what had from last test which wasnt correct for normal use, now there are the one had for normal use and below the changes used for the last test only.

Default Re: Defective card or driver solveable problem with two monitors ?

First a few things. In all cases a dvi output carries a digital signal and in some cases a dvi output also carries the 'old' VGA signal. A dvi->d-sub converter just makes you use the signal IF it is available. (Depending on the card, I'm not sure what is the case for yours only one or sometimes both dvi outputs carry the analog signal).

When you use a dvi-->d-sub converter you need to use 'CRT' and not DFP as the drivers mean 'digital' with DFP.

The ConnectedMonitor line corresponds to the first and second monitor. As you have connected the primary screen using dvi, you should use "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP, CRT" if you connect the first monitor using dvi and the second using vga.

I hope this solves some of the confusion.

Default Re: Defective card or driver solveable problem with two monitors ?

May be first post is not clear on this, dvi0 always works from start, either using dvi or vga with the adapter that came with the graphics card. Problem comes when trying to use both connectors the graphics card has.

First thing tried was one DFP and one CRT in ConnectedMonitors option (as without these doesnt even try), but different combinations of plugs do:

DVI, adapter: says gpu doesnt support configuration

adapter, dvi: only get image on vga through adapter

dvi, "dvi" (forced being not a dvi monitor really there) was only for testing knowing wouldnt get image on the second monitor, and doesnt work as expected either, on old graphics card doing so would give me a 2560x1024 desktop which only had image on one screen, on this card i get a 1280x1024 desktop even if it is forced to think there are two dvi monitors connected, and message says about two monitors.

Thx anyways for the reply, although that was the first configuration that tried but didnt work as expected.

Edit: Edited first post to make clearer the configuration part, to avoid possible confusion with config file.
