Default wanting better playback

Hi folks,

I just noticed recently that my playback on my linux box isn't as smooth as my Comcast DCT 6200 set top box. That means, my linux box's playback isn't bad at all. However, I would like the playback to be as equal as the set top box. Can that be achieved? My CPU is an Athlon 64 3000, 512mb, and Nvidia 6600GT AGP. I'm playing back HD recordings from mythtv.

Thanks!
