my problem is similar to what some of you guys are experiencing, yet different.

i'm totally new to linux, and am trying to install Fedora Core 8 on my machine, which is running an nVidia 8800 GTX card.

At the point in the installation sequence where the program detects the nVidia card, it searches for drivers, then the screen goes blank.

So, I'd welcome any suggestions (in noob language, if you please :-) that anyone may have as to how I can get Fedora installed on my machine.

Your problem is not similar at all. Moreover, this is not a NVIDIA driver problem, it's rather a Fedora problem. You should ask on some Fedora-related forum.
