Default IDL complains about unsupported visual

I have a dual proc Dell precision 530 running RedHat 8 with a GeForce 4 loaded with 128MB RAM(on the video card) and a flat panel ViewSonic 19.1 inch display. IDL complains about unsupported visuals. When xdpyinfo is run it reports back 2 "TrueColor" visual modes.
IDL states the problem is NOT their's. RedHat says it is a driver issue and so after getting the driver updates the list of visuals has reduced to one "TrueColor".
The tech support at NVIDIA said to edit the XF86Config file to support 24 bit color. When this is done the X display totally dies and the only way to repair is to move back to a backup of the XF86Config file that was there prior to the change.
I need to find out the magical info to enter into XF86Config to keep the XWindows alive and enable "PseudoColor", "GrayScale", "StaticGray", "TrueColor, "DirectColor", etc.
I have tried to get the folks at NVIDIA to be specific with options and every time I have gone forward with their ideas X breaks specifically going from 16 bit color to 24 bit.
Anybody out there with a clue to share would be appreciated. Thanks!
