I am attempting to install the NV Proprietary Driver for a GFORCE card on Fedora FC6. My kernel is 2.6.22.9-61.fc6 and I have the corresponding kernel-devel rpm installed. I have gcc-4.1.2-13.fc6 installed. Initially, the installer fails to find the kernel source, so I pointed to it with the kernel-source-path command parameter.
The installer does not find a pre-compiled driver for my kernel and doesn't find one on the NV ftp. The installer then attempts to compile a driver against my kernel, but fails at the end with: Kernel module compilation complete. ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s). Please see the log entries 'Kernel module load error' and 'Kernel messages' at the end of the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for more information. -> Kernel module load error: insmod: error inserting './usr/src/nv/nvidia.ko': -1 Invalid module format I checked the /lib/modules/2.6.22.9-61.fc6/kernel/drivers/video directory and there is a subdir for nvidia and riva with nvidiafb.ko and rivafb.ko in them respectively, but they are part of the kernel rpm installation. So what do I need to do to get the driver installation to work. TIA Fred |

You may want to check to see if you are a victim of the i586 bug. Perhaps you have the wrong kernel installed for your architecture. The following link gives details. (you have to read down the page a bit...)
I586 install bug Also details on what hardware you are using, both video and motherboard+processor would be helpful. Please also post what version of the Nvidia driver you were trying to install..... Kid |

CPU AMD Sempron 2400
I don't think this is a kernel/hardware mismatch problem. Fred |

nvidia: version magic '2.6.22.14-72.fc6 SMP mod_unload 686 4KSTACKS ' should be '2.6.22.14-72.fc6 SMP mod_unload 586 4KSTACKS 'The kernel development files you built the driver against do not match the running kernel. |

Zander and Kid were correct. I neglected to look at the link about the Fedora FC6 bug. I installed the i686 kernel, and now the driver loads.
Thank you both. Fred |
