That's another reason why I think it's a bad reason to have it in the open.

To the OP: Do you have any kids in your house that might end up fooling around with your hardware?

I don't want to get you drunk, but, ah, that's a very fine Chardonnay you're not drinking.

Also, its going to be loud.

A graphics card fan is loud as hell under full load. I would never want one sitting out in the open while trying to game.

My 8800 isn't, but my HTPC 7800 is. I limit it to 30% in Rivatuner though.

Look for a stand like this, or make one like this guy did.

I still think it's a silly idea to use a test bench as your everyday rig.....and I agree with the others saying it would collect more dust sitting there. And I don't even know about it running cooler. With a properly cooled case there is a constant flow of air over key components that keeps the temps down. With it out in the open you won't get air flow over stuff. And for the record, I haven't cleaned out my case in 7 months and there is no sign of dust in it yet. I have dust filters on my 120mm fans though....so that's why.

I run my system from a slightly converted chest of drawers. It's alright.

Cooling is pretty good. The system is effectively out in the open air, so it remains good and chilly at all times. At the moment, the CPU, a Core 2Duo E4300 clocked at 2.8GHz, is running at about a 30% load and at 30c. The GPU, an 1800XL while the good car is away off at the menders, reports a fairly relaxed 57c. I have five Seagate HDs in the system, none are above 32c, The fact that it's so cold here this morning that my penis has shrunk to the point of being barely more than a clitoris and might soon become an 'inny' does have some influence on it all, but it still is all good.

The loudness of the system is quite acceptable. I use several tons of noise and vibration dampening material (read: cheap mousemats off eBuyer and some old bed sheets) to prevent the wooden unit from acting like an acoustic guitar's body and amplifying the sound, and it is effective. It's quieter than the Antec case I used to use. Fans are able to run a good deal slower, which makes the system quieter still.

So, quiet, cool, slightly cheaper, and not likely to accidently be kicked over. It's good all-round. The only real downside is that now, I don't have a footrest. Caseless is good.
