connecting a usb hd to a ps3

I just bought a seagate freeagent 320 GB. I have a bunch of HD movies in mkv format. Can I copy those over to the external harddrive and play it thru usb? How abt xvid movies?

I can stream using my pc and tversity but my wireless keeps dropping connection and then I have to replay movie from the start.

The PS3 only supports mpg and mp4 formats by default I believe. If you want to use xvid, divx and mkv then you got to use a PC and a transcoder.

You can easily convert .mkv format movies to mp4 using 'PS3 Video 9' by www.redkawa.com. The only problem is that the external harddrive must be FAT32 and because of this the files must be <4 Gb in size.
However most mkv files are around this size and they get smaller after conversion since the audio is converted from ac3 5.1ch to AAC 2ch.

I think you can get around the filesize limit of FAT32 by copying the mp4 file to the PS3 from the streaming server.

Fing A...I got the HD yesterday and it was formatted in NTFS. SO I went in XP and deleted the partition thru disk manager. Made a 30 GB FAT32 "Primary" partition and left the other space as unallocated. Then I copied some mpg files into the new partition. Connected the drive to my ps3 and it shows the drive under Video but when I select it, it says no titles found. Is there a way to get this working??? Or should I just copy the files through the XMB,thats shows up under TVersity media Server and play it natively now that we have divx support!!!!

There should be a view all files option. Reason it doesn't display is because the PS3 looks for a certain directory structure.

Just make a folder called Video in the root of the drive and put the files in there.

yes it worked...only problem some of the xvid movies still dont work, guess the codec support is not as good as the 360!!!!
