Question New and need help making NVIDIA_kernel

OK, please bear with me because I'm VERY new at this... trying to pull myself away from using "that other OS" for over 10 years.

I'm trying to make the NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4180
Here is what I did:
1) Ensured the kernal source code is installed.
2) Edit /etc/inittab changing id:5:initdefault to id:3:initdefault
3) Reboot and log in at the prompt as root
4) cd to the NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4180 dir
5) Type make install

Here is the error I'm getting:

cc:1code model 'kernel' not supported in 32bit mode
nv.c: In function nv_agp_translate_address:
nv.c:2756 warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size
make: [nv.o] Error 1

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Why are you using 4180? Do you have an Opteron CPU? If not, that is not the correct driver to be using, even if you do have an AMD chip. 4180 is for AMD64 chips (the 64-bit ones).

Athlon XP, Athlon MP, regular Athlon, and Duron CPUs are all 100% compatible with the IA32 instruction set (that's how they get sold, after all: if they weren't compatible with the instruction set, then nothing would run on them!). Therefore, you need to be using the IA32 drivers (version 4363).
