Default NV-XVMC (WARN): failed to allocate AGP DMA buffer

I've been tracking down a problem that I am getting when playing DVDs using a NV44A [GeForce 6200] using xine. I have been seeing the following error:

video_out_xxmc: ERROR: Accelerated surface allocation failed.
video_out_xxmc: You are probably out of framebuffer memory.
video_out_xxmc: Falling back to software decoding.

I enabled XVMC_DEBUG=2 and found that the error is immediately preceeded by:

NV-XVMC (WARN): failed to allocate AGP DMA buffer
NV-XVMC (WARN): allocated framebuffer DMA buffer instead
NV-XVMC (WARN): failed to allocate subpicture in AGP memory

I've had a bit of a look around the forums and done some googling and found a very small number of people who have seen this error but with no suggested fix. The card only has 128M of memory but this should be more than enough to hold some DVD image sized buffers. I tried experimenting with different values for NvAGP and AGP GART sizes in the BIOS but neither of those helped.

Can anyone explain the problem that I am seeing or even better suggest a fix?
