Default 169.07 on 2.6.24 AMD64 Ubuntu - No Xserver will start

Cheers,

I'm with Ubuntu Hardy Alpha 1 + Updates on Kernel 2.6.24 amd64.
Since the current 'nvidia-glx-new' package has unmet dependencies I will have a try to nvidia beta-driver. I downloaded the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-169.07-pkg2.run, uninstalled old 'nvidia-glx-new', 'nvidia-kernel-common' and 'restricted-modules-generic', run 'sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop', switched to tty1 and run the installer via SH (log is in attachement). The installer does it's thing without any warning or error.

Finally I rebooted my OS, but it doesnt start up XServer. The output on screen is:

Quote:
Warning: Could not retrieve EDID because get-edid is not installed (1): error: this program does not know how to configure the "10 shared/default-x-server doesn't exist" X server
Warning: COuld not generate /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe for vesa driver

Any ideas?

Kind regards.

I think the error is this (nvidia-installer.log):
Quote:
-> Building kernel module:
executing: 'cd ./usr/src/nv; make module SYSSRC=/lib/modules/2.6.24-2-generi
c/build SYSOUT=/lib/modules/2.6.24-2-generic/build'...
NVIDIA: calling KBUILD...
make CC=cc KBUILD_VERBOSE=1 -C /lib/modules/2.6.24-2-generic/build SUBDIRS=
/tmp/selfgz16608/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-169.07-pkg2/usr/src/nv modules
test -e include/linux/autoconf.h -a -e include/config/auto.conf || ( \
echo; \
echo " ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid."; \
echo " include/linux/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are mis
sing."; \
echo " Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it
."; \
Installing header files
Quote:
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.24-2-generic
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-169.07-pkg2.run --kernel-sources-path=/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.24-2-generic
=> Same error (different path)
so i tried this:
Quote:
cd /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.24-2-2-generic && make oldconfig && make prepare
=>
Quote:
make[1]: *** Keine Regel vorhanden, um das Target »arch/i386/kernel/asm-offsets.c«,
benötigt von »arch/i386/kernel/asm-offsets.s«, zu erstellen. Schluss.
make: *** [prepare0] Fehler 2
^^
(no rule to create target ... dependant by ... exit)

I tried it with linux-sources-... , too and created a link to 'linux' - Same thing, except that 'make prepare' works withound an error, but nvidia-installer still claims for make oldconfig && make prepare.

I don't know how to go on, please help.

Ha, i got it working myself. I did the hole process AGAIN after reading the thread that mentiones to uninstall nvidia-glx-new, linux-restricted-modules-common etc. nvidia-installer.log still has got the same error message about make oldconfig && make prepare, but this time XServer loads properly with the new driver. Thanks for your help
