Default One of the numerous reasons why I dislike proprietary drivers.

From Nvidia employee posting:

Some distributions have the option of installing a 64-bit kernel for use with all 32-bit userspace programs. This configuration is not supported by the NVIDIA Linux Graphics Driver. If you try to install the 64-bit driver package on such a system, you will receive an error like the following:
./nvidia-installer: No such file or directory
If you have this configuration, use your distribution's package manager to install a 32-bit kernel and then install the 32-bit version of the NVIDIA Linux Graphics Driver.

I have 6GB of RAM (not enough) and with a 32bit bigmem kernel I have problems with memalloc. Running a 32bit Kernel is NOT an option.

so get a sane distribution. 32bit userland and 64bit kernel is a little idiotic.

Please tell me one good reason for 32bit userland? Oh, there is none. Well....

The configuration in question is specific to configurations with 64-bit kernels supporting an exclusively 32-bit user-space environment, a combination that isn't supported by nvidia-installer since it's non-trivial to handle correctly and uncommon; nvidia-installer is a GPL licensed application, however, patches are welcome. The driver itself does support this configuration. Regular 32-bit and 64-bit (with and without 32-bit libraries) installations are fully supported by both the driver and NVIDIA's installation software.
