Default Free drivers

When will NVIDIA free their drivers? My next graphics card will be non-NVIDIA if there is only non-free driver option available for 3d accelerated graphics. NVIDIA doesn't contribute to free software, they use users only as a market.

I don't want to continue/start another flamewar. But it is more complicated: a 90% crossplatform driver, IP issues and so on ...

BTW Ati isn't that great either anymore regarding free drivers. Their "old" Radeon 7x00, 8x00 and some 9x00 models indeed have "free" 3d drivers. For newer cards they seem to turn away from free drivers. They haven't released any specs yet and according to recent interviews they aren't planning to release most specs because of similar reasons as nvidia. They are focussing more and more on their closed source driver.
