Default mandrake 9.1 showing blank screen

after installing the 4363 driver, I kept either getting a blank screen on boot, or my screen would shut off. This is on a Dell Inspiron 2650 notebook. I finally tried the 4349 and they work! Nothing was done differently, I was loading into failsafe mode using text only to edit the XF86Config-4 so it would load driver "nv" to get back into x. Sometimes, I get an error:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVdriver kernel module! (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***

and

(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration

any thoughts as to why the older driver works and the newer one doesn't? I am new to linux, and i did search, but alot of the stuff discussed was over my head. I have tried typing:
insmod nvidia
before starting x, and that did not help, and I also tried inserting the line:
option "NvAgp" "1"
into my xf86config-4 file. neither of these helped

hmm, tried reinstalling 4349, same issue. Installed 4363, same issue, but 4363 said it may not be able to uninstall the old version properly. Tried installing 4349, and it seems to work now. Played chromium, rebooted, logged on to diff users, played again, rebooted again, seems good at this point. Still can't get the latest and greatest working though
