PCI-E soundcard?

Do they even exsist? I can't seem to find them if they do. Anyone know of any?

why would you want one? do you have spare pci-e 1/4x slots

I think Creative's new X-Fi will be available for PCI-e.

Well, maybe not:

"As far as PCI Express (PCIe) is concerned, which is the next bus, what we found is that the performance of PCIe is truly bad for audio. We are seeing four times degradation on the bus for audio.

PCIe is designed for graphics and high data transfer, but audio sends very small packets and the overhead can be very big! Moving the data across PCIe is much, much higher than PCI. So what we have to do is go back to the drawing board and work on the transport part of the chip and re-design it to add more silicon to overcome some of the problems we had with PCIe. So for us to come up with a PCIe solution is going to take a while because we have to overcome the problems we're facing with that bus."

Because the computer I have now only has PCI-E slots. One 16x and one 1x.

Hrmm, are the USB based external Soundcards anygood? The onboard sound for my shuttle is just horrid.

Yes they can be. I don't know about the latest X-Fi range but on the old Extigy cards they usually had better SNRs because the hardware was away from the vibrations and intereference caused by PC hardware. They're definitely not as good in gaming performane, but they can be for HTPC or purely music uses.

Seems odd that they wouldn't have any Soundcards in PCI-E, I personaly don't care for EAX, just want my music to sound halfway decent, and the VIA Vinyl Audio just sucks majorly.

It was rumored to be out a year ago this month... but that obviously hasnt happened. Im having problems finding any PCI-E sound solutions, and Im looking everywhere I can think of.

EDIT: Have you considered an external?
