i don't think it has anything to do with Sony. rather, it may be more about the restrictions on Blu-ray that are akin to standard definition DVD: region coding for example.

oppo and other companies already have region free players in the works, and unlike dvd, apparently japan and us are in the same region. region encoding shouldn't end up being too bad with drm cracked and all, you could just re-author it with a different region if need be.

i don't know if anyone is aware there's over 100 blu-ray titles are region free.

you should be aware region coding on blu-ray is NOT mandatory.
