Default 8800 GT in Ubuntu - Possible??

I've been trying now for 8 hours (I'm not kidding) to install the 100.14.19 drivers in Ubuntu.

Now, I AM new to Linux, but Jesus Christ it can't be this hard?? I have a few questions:

What packages are needed for the installer to work? I need names so I can apt-get. The documentation for the drivers is *horrible* and tells you stuff like "you need glibc", "kernel source" and "kernel headers" which makes no sense and returns either 23987 results in aptitude or no results at all.

I tried the Envy script thing, which seemed nice, but didn't detect my 8800 GT so I tried manual anyway, which of course didn't work, BUT after this I could run the installer, so I guess it installed some packages I needed.

Didn't change a thing, though. After a reboot it was back to the same safe mode graphics.

So - Which packages are needed, and what do I need to do after I have managed to run "sudo sh nvidafileblabla" through with no errors?

Oh - this is all on a completely fresh Ubuntu 7.10 installation.

did you try to install the driver from the restricted driver manager under the system menu?

it should be the same just one version earlier...

or try this in the terminal:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new

The restricted driver manager said something about not needing a restricted driver. Nvidia-glx-new didn't work. I'm guessing it would work with my old 7950 GT, but it didn't with 8800 GT

The 8800GT isn't supported in the 100.14.19 driver. 8800GT support was only just added in the latest beta driver, 169.04. There's no Ubuntu package so you'll have to use the manual installer, but it should go quite smoothly for you now you've got that working.

Expect to be a bit disappointed if you were hoping Compiz would be faster, though. The drivers seem not to be very well optimized yet. The 8800GT's 16xQ antialiasing makes my cube look awesome, but I do miss those smooth 7900GS animations.

geee, i have geforce 400mx with 64m and compiz works damn smooth, i don't see the point of having the toppest graphic card out there, even for extreme players.

I finally installed my XFX 8800GT in a fresh install of ubuntu Gutsy. I forced vesa mode installation, disabled the nv driver and installed the Nvidia beta driver

Just use envy (click) next time. It installs the drivers for you, painlessly.
