Default KDE4 almost unuseable

Hello,

I've just updated my system to a GeForce-8500 and I am experiencing terrible performance problems for desktop applications.

I am running Fedora8 (with latest updates) + KDE4.0.2 + FireFox3B4.
Resizing/Painting performance is especially bad for all KDE4/QT4 applications, GTK is not good but better. FireFox3 has problems when scrolling on webpages that have transparency or a lot of graphical elements, top shows most time is eaten by Xorg.
KDE3/QT3 applications repaint and resize fast without any problems.

Any ideas what could be the problem?

Thx Thindy

Poor Render acceleration is probably the primary culprit here. Not much you can do about it except wait for nvidia to fix it, or at least accelerate the required render operations (nvidia does not accelerate all render operations AFAIK). One thing I noticed is that kde4 from trunk is a lot more snappy probably due to Qt4.4

Has anyone noticed any speed improvements with different InitialPixmapPlacement values? Oh yeah have you got RenderAccel enabled? Its usually on by default but some distros disable it.

4.0.X is full with debug code and known to be slow.

Thats wrong - QT4 is production code (QT4.0 was released years ago), and it does not matter wether I use QT4-only or KDE4 applications. On my Intel-Laptop which has a 945GM with the EXA enabled drivers it runs almost smooth.

Furthermore I can't imagine what debug code should have to do with resizing/repainting windows - because most of the work done there is done by QT4, leaving the KDE4 code almost unused.

Check the Glibc $ENV:

MALLOC_CHECK_=1

http://www.gnu.org/software/libtool/...-Checking.html

use:

> export | grep -i malloc

to check, but if you run KDE4 it will be set.

KDE4 sets that, and does slow down applications. Whether that applies here or not, I don't know.

I think KDE4 itself is not the problem. I ran one of the beta live CDs inside virtualbox (virtualbox.org) and it felt really snappy. Running it natively (quadro 570m) was waaaay slower. As the OP said, usable, but barely.

The same applies when running it under a nested xserver like xephyr. Sure you can't any fancy compositing but window drawing is significantly snappier.

compiling it without debugging enabled its almost just as slow.

It runs as fast as KDE 3 did here (or at least as fast as I remember KDE 3 running.)

I have no lags and I have some composite (or kwin?) effects on.

I tried it with vesa drivers instead of nvidia binary and it was smoother. I also have problems with kde4, but it seems to be nvidia. I don't know if it is text rendering or general 2d performance.

I have the same problem with nVidia and KDE 4.1 Beta 2 here. If I put into the same computer an ATI Radeon 9600 it is a lot smoother than with nVidia GeForce 7600GS.

I don't pretend that this will go any distance towards fixing anything, but the tips I added here made life much more tolerable for me along with the InitialPixmapPlacement=2 GlyphCache=1 stuff.

I think the binary nvidia crap is the problem.

Thank You NVIDIA, we have a new KDE4 and with your help, it is unusable....

Many people (Some Vista users) will test the new KDE4.
And the first impression will be: wow this is unbearable slow...
