Default font problems with nvidia driver and a widescreen resolution

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron with the build in restricted nvidia grafic driver.

The problem is that in Firefox 3 beta 4 some Homepage and other applications like pidgin, plugin Guifications appear in bold fonts.
If i switch to Firefox 2.0.0.12 or earlier the problem does not exist any more in firefox.
It seems to be connected to my widescreen resolution of 1680x1050 because if i change the resolution to a non widescreen resolution the problem has gone in all apps.

A switch of the build in driver to the nvidia native driver doesn't resolve the problem, only the change to the build in nv driver solve it.
The problem occurs also in Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon.

How can this be solved without cange the resolution or the driver to nv?

Force the font dpi, for all toolkits (gtk, qt, ... ) and for X fonts in general.

The fonts aren't necessarily bold, the font renderer just sucks. After fonts pass a certain threshold in size the freetype engine will often start rendering them noticeably thicker. Try adjusting font sizes in a word processor and you'll see where that jump suddenly happens, instead of being a nice smooth increase in thickness and size.

Your DPI settings control the size fonts are rendered at for a given point size in common apps, which is why changing resolution or driver can affect this in common apps.

You can adjust your DPI (which will break font metrics, but unless you're doing some serious type-lettering you probably don't care), or just adjust your default application font size to something slightly smaller.

OK, DPI was the right way!

I change in Xorg.conf my Section "Monitor" from:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

to:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
Option "UseEdidDpi" "FALSE"
Option "DPI" "96x96"
EndSection

and the problem is solved!

Thanks!
