alright well running that command indeed shows that GlyphCache is set to 1

I have that and the initialpixmapplacement set in my .xinitrc file as follows:

sudo nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2 &
sudo nvidia-settings -a GlyphCache=1 &
sleep 1
sudo nvidia-settings --load-config-only &

will these settings take effect immediately? even if set after the X server is already running?
is there a way to make these settings more permanent? (.nvidia-settings-rc maybe?)

I'm just not sure because I've not really noticed much difference, then again I am using urxvt as my terminal with sub-pixel (and AA) fonts... so the problem may lie in urxvt and not with the nvidia drivers

why sudo?

why not nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2 -a GlyphCache=1
?

how about loading config first?

and the &? I am not sure that it is really needed.

i agree with what #170 said. you don't need sudo stuff.

just nvidia-setting directly, and yes, it will take effect right after that command.

I'm going to retract that statement. Today it seems much better! The jerkiness has gone away, and it is working pretty well. I wonder if it needed time to "cache some glyphs"

how about the rest of kde4? How well does it work for you? Window resizing, terminal scrolling, tearing off menu's etc... I'm curious because I find that it generally crawls for me.

All of these actions are fairly smooth now.

I wonder if there are any plans by nvidia in accelerating text AA in legacy drivers as well. I'm using them.

By the way, does anyone know any way to benchmark different fonts? Do you think that different fonts need different resources?

No, its all pretty much the same. The single glyphs (a single letter of a font rendered) are cached in VRAM, so to the GPU all fonts look the same, they are just small pictures. What the pictures contain is not relevant for accaleration at all.
