Smile No device found - Ubuntu 7.10

I have a Pny Verto GeForce 6600GT with 256mb that a friend gave me to replace my really ancient cheap video card. I could not get a GUI in any readable form, including just using the vesa driver, in Ubuntu. I found out the friend had flashed the BIOS. I found a site with 3 revisions of the BIOS - the first was the original version number as per the tag on the card. The next was rev 2. Neither of these made any difference. The rev 3 made the card now post as only having 128mb but at least it does present a readable GUI using the "nv" driver in xorg.

I then followed the instructions in the sticky and on other posts to remove files and packages so I could install the driver from nvidia. This failed.

Next I tried the Envy package. It did a lot of stuff and finished okay. Upon reboot, X wouldn't start. I ran startx from a the command prompt and it says "no device found" (might have been "device not found" - I'm not sure which) with the /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/nvidia/nvidia.ko file. I tried to modprobe nvidia and get the same error.

Any help would be appreciated. If I need to reflash the BIOS to some other version to start with, please let me know. From there, any help in getting the "nvidia" driver to work with my card would be appreciated. BTW - the "restricted drivers" in Ubuntu didn't work either.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Sorry! I forgot to include what is probably going to matter the most - the tail of DMSG:

Might help if you actually read the stickies properly this time, and post the nvidia-bug-report.log

You guys are such a****s!!!! I've never seen these types of replies in ANY forum I've been in. In case you are interested, but obviously you are not, the intent was to show a MOTHERBOARD problem and hence that the GeForce6600GT was not to blame. But screw you all.

BTW - remove my name from your user list - I'd do it myself but can't find an entry for it (yes you idiots, I CAN read)
