Default ASUS 8800GT freezes when running 3D applications

Graphics card: EN8800GT/HTDP/1G

This is a new system, as specified here:
http://www.bcpi.com/showpages.asp?pid=1182

For this project:
http://invitro.umassmed.edu/dokuwiki...uted_computing

After running any 3D application, like glxgears, the system will freeze. I can get control back using SysRQ and reboot the system.

This is the important bit in the log:
Feb 19 13:14:58 oxygen kernel: irq 52: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)
Feb 19 13:14:58 oxygen kernel:

Feb 19 13:15:06 oxygen kernel: NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 16, Head 00000001 Count 000365fa

I will most likely return this card because that is what most people have done after searching the forums.

Out of interest: did you have any problems getting this card working using the nVidia drivers? You're using Fedora 8, the same kernel as me, with exactly the same card as me (including the same revision) and mine doesn't work under Linux at all, except when using VESA drivers

Interestingly though, your bug report shows the BIOS version of your card whereas mine doesn't...

Yes, I used the nvidia driver.

Update:

I returned the ASUS EN8800GT/HTDP/1G card and the vendor put in a Palit 1GB 8800GT card and that fixed the problem.

Now, the system doesn't freeze when I do anything in 3D.

Here is the link to the new card:

And, no, I have never heard of Palit.

FYI, update

Vendor took the system back and it still froze under Windows for them with the ASUS EN8800GT/HTDP/1G card. The vendor put the 1 GB 8800GT Palit card into the system, which runs fine under Windows and Linux.

The vendor then RMA the EN8800GT/HTDP/1G card back to ASUS. The card was supposedly fixed and returned but still freezes under Linux and Windows. The vendor might have to eat the money for that card because ASUS is hard to deal with and ASUS has refused to take the card back. I would stay away from ASUS but especially the EN8800GT/HTDP/1G card.

The palit card is working fine.

I have two Palit 1GB 8800gt's in sli working under fedora 8. I did have a few issues when I first upgraded from 7600gt's, but nothing show stopping. Upgrading to *169.12 made everything alright. Sorry to hear about your ASUS card, but it seems that the setup should work. I have noticed that the kmod version works well to, actualy I've experince less issues with it. Those with fedora may want to try 'sudo yum install kmod-nvidia'.

I use the kmod-nvidia myself and because I managed multiple linux machines, I love it.

Otherwise, every time the kernel changed, I would have to log into that machine to recompile the nvidia kernel module.

To use the kmod version, you have to have the livna respository installed.

For fedora 8: rpm -Uvh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm

kbellve,
I just posted a thread about the Palit 1gb video card and figured I'd drop you a note here beacuse we share a similar card. I'm having this issue where NVClock is reporting the memory as a 128 bit interface and not the 256 bit that is I expected. Any chance you could could confirm this?
