Default Odd freeze/crash

I have a GeForce 8600 GT, and am having an odd issue with it under linux. At first it would lock up/kernel panic the system after a while of running any 3d accellerated app, then it became more frequent, then eventually any time I ran a 3d app, then at last whenever I used the nvidia driver. dmesg shows multipe NVRM: Xid messages (mostly 6 and 13, but others as well). I am pretty sure that this is not related to my graphics hardware, as I tried another graphics card (a 7300 I believe) and experienced the same results. Is there any chance that you could provide any insight into why this is happening or how to fix it? The card works fine with the nv (not nvidia proprietary) drivers, but there's no 3d or 2d accelleration at all. I just stepped up to a 780i to cure MOSFET problems (I love EVGA!), so I really hope it's not that. Also, I have tried updating the bios on it, but that did not help.

Other system info that might be needed:
Kernel: Currently using 2.6.23.17
Arch: x86_64
Distro: Foresight Linux 2 Nvidia
Driver Version: Ive tried several, including: 100.14.19 167.09 167.12 171.06

Hardware:
CPU: Q6600
Motherboard: nforce 780i
RAM: 2 GB DDR2 1066
Vid Card: GeForce 8600 GT
PSU: 650W
