Do you really need so many options in the device section of xorg.conf? The configuration might perform better if the Nvidia driver was left to guess what is best (although that isn't always the case).

First of all remove the loading of "dri" in the module section. That is a no-no. While at it remove the dri options elsewhere.

you could also try turning damage events, backingstore and triple buffering on.

And remove the metamode.

With a good monitor you don't have to give any modes - it will use the best automatically - and it makes switching between resolutions (like with krandrtray) a lot easier&better.

Well the nvidia driver has problems with 2D accaleration its nothing special to the 6200.

First of all, sorry for neglecting this thread for so long.

To who asked why I had so many options and general clutter in my xorg.conf, let's say it was an attempt to collect all the tips and tricks and "optimal" settings found in different guides, howtos and forums. It turns out some were even contradictory, like the DRI one. What puzzles me is that using a barebone xorg.conf file, performance, issues and glxgears results are basically the same. Switching several options on and off, 0,5% glxgears impact.
The only chance to make a difference is to use Compiz-fusion, then the tearing and "melting" go away, other issues kick in and the glxgears performance obviously decreases.

Anyway, I assume this is the best possible place to ask about nVidia cards on Linux, so... can I borrow an "optimal" xorg.conf? The card, again, is a GF 6200. Thank you.

glxgears is completly meaningless. No changes (or big changes) in glxgears do not translate into 'real world' performance at all. glxgears can suck - but the 'real' apps be fast. Or the other way round. glxgears is only good for.. well to see if 3d is working at all. Or some minor stuff if you exactly know what you are looking for.

So you basically have no video card-related options set. I already tried that way and saw no improvement. Maybe I'm just expecting too much and/or should look into other factors. Thanks, by the way.
