Default Legacy drivers 96.xx.xx don't work with GeForce2 Go

Hi.
I've got some troubles in installing and using your graphic driver.
I've got an acer travelmate laptop with a GeForce2 Go graphic card and x86 architecture. I recently downloaded the new legacy driver, version 96.43.05. After the install process, I run the nvidia-xconf script to modify my xorg.conf file with the composite glx option enabled.
But when I reboot, my xserver doesn't start, an error message appears.
I attach my xorg.conf file before and after drivers installation and the nvidia log (in txt extension). I hope that someone could really help me.
I'm using ubuntu 7.10, Xorg 7.2 and kernel 2.6.22-14.

Thank you so much for your kind answer.
Paolo

Your question about using ubuntu with the nvidia driver is answered in the sticky posts.
The problem you describe is caused by ubuntu's "restricted driver manager", not by the nvidia driver.

In "installing on recent distributions" it's specified to edit the linux-restricted-modules or to remove that packages, I thought it was the same thing.
Anyway, I'll try then I'll let you know.
Thank you for your answer.

EDIT: just another question: is the 96.xx.xx the right driver for my GeForce2 Go?

Ok, I installed the drivers but now I have a strange problem: when I reboot or turn on my laptop, ubuntu loads but the login page does not appear. I can hear the intro sound but the screen stands black. If I type ctrl+alt+backspace to reload my X, the login page appear correctly and I can use my system. If I open the nvidia x-settings app, I can see that everything is right.
From the shell, the glxinfo | grep rendering command returns "direct rendering: yes". It means the drivers work fine but there's still that little problem I hope someone could help me solving.

Add [ Option "NoLogo" "yes" ] this to device section in xorg.conf

Perhaps, this can help you.

Next time I reboot I'll see..
Just another question: I'm using xcompmgr as compose manager. When I switch between windows, I have some little glitches. xcompmgr creates shadow bordered windows and creates a macos-like shadow when switching between windows. But it doesn't have many possible configurations. I would like to know if somebody knows how to set the X for best performances with this composite manager.
