Default Unknown Automatic Overclock

Not sure what else to title this post, but here is a strange problem that I found no reference of in the forums:

I replaced my 6800 Ultra Overclock several months ago with a 7900 GS card. I put away the 6800 as I was planning on putting in another system.

My 7900 GS started acting up so I removed it and sent it back waiting on a new one. I put the 6800 back in and I started getting random strange lock ups, mouse would freeze, keyboard would freeze, etc.

Looking in my /var/log/messages, I saw I was getting some errors like:

Apr 17 11:53:19 buttercup NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 13, 0002 beef3097 00004097
000002
20 02000001 00000002
Apr 17 11:53:19 buttercup NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 30, L1 -> L0
Apr 17 11:53:27 buttercup NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 6, PE0002 03e0 000c2310
00110d88
00000207 00082304
Apr 17 11:53:27 buttercup NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 30, L1 -> L0

Some investigation said it could be heat (never had the problem before, but everything is possible), so I figured I would underclock it a little. I opened nvidia-settings and saw my card was running overclocked.

Normally it is supposed to run at 450/1200, but it was shown running at 481/1284 for both 2D and 3D clocks.

I brought it down to 450/1200 using nvidia-settings and it is perfectly stable now.

Strange thing is, I have never overclocked this card. If I click "Hardware Defaults" or "Auto Detect" it goes back to 481/1284. If I reboot, it goes back to 481/1284.

Also checking the .nvidia-settings-rc has no reference to any overclocking.

Any guess on this behavior and any way to fix it?

Thanks,
Ken

Do you reinstall nvidia-driver each times...

I heard, did not reinstall then some times VGA card work uncorrectly.

6800ultra overclock and 7900GS has similar clockspeed, but I think important thing is
these has another GPU and PCB-board. (or, mem-clockspeed makes this problem)

I have rebuild the nvidia-drivers (I am using Gentoo), nothing changed. I RMAed the 7900 and hopefully will have it soon. I will put the 6800 Ultra in another system once I get the replacement card. I am curious to see what happens.

I can't see how rebuilding the drivers would make a difference, unless I am missing something. As far as I know all of the settings, at least on my system, come from /etc/X11/xorg.conf or ~/.nvidia-settings-rc

Thanks,
Ken
