Can you install the nvidia-glx-new and related packages? That should be quite a bit easier and will keep you up to date automatically. Otherwise, you have to change to the location of the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12.pkg1.run file, chmod 755 NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12.pkg1.run, then ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12.pkg1.run (as root). Unless ubuntu has some scripts to update /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or if you install the driver manually), you should update this file to use -- Driver "nvidia" -- instead of "nv".

nVIDIA-GLX
nVIDIA-GLX-NEW
Was those the drivers?

I use Debian, which has different packages, so I'm not really sure what all you need or what nvidia-xconfig is about. If these packages provide a libGL.so and nvidia_drv.so driver for Xorg and you have updated /etc/X11/xorg.conf to use the nvidia driver, you should be good to go.

You can open up a terminal and run this command to check for the necessary files -
dpkg -L nvidia-glx nvidia-glx-new | egrep '(libGL|nvidia_drv)'

Mine looks like this:
Quote:
-(~) dpkg -L nvidia-glx|egrep '(libGL|nvidia_drv)'
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so
/usr/lib/libGL.so.169.12
/usr/lib/libGLcore.so.169.12
/usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1
/usr/lib/libGL.so.1
I found a few links on google, but didn't see a real howto or anything. Maybe this youtube video for 7.10 will help.

Well, I'm not all to sure whats going on, but I got the installation running, but I get this... I don't know how to exit out of what its telling me to...
Quote:
ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before
installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING
THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver
download page at www.nvidia.com.
Also, I'm not sure how to get those packages your talking about...

Sounds like you need to exit X or gdm/similar.

Would that be in sessions? I'm not sure where to find running programs or proseses...
Oh yeah, gdm, I can end that, but it says it allows me to log on graphically... (Through the login screen)
I found some stuff in system monitor (Prosesses)
And the only similar one I saw was "x-session-manager".
I ended it, it doesn't help.

Hi Scruffy, looks like we have had a similar problem here - and thanks to Logan for the help so far.
(I see the same packages as Logan when I check with dpkg)

We managed to get the drivers aboard two ways - using the terminal in recovery mode to avoid the X-server ERROR messages and using synaptic as below. Same result.....

We have Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 on a Sempron 3400+ system with 6200 (NV44) graphics card that works happily using the nv driver, but it fails to white screen at the logon when rebooting after using Synaptic to install the current nvidia-glx-new package - version 169.12-2.6.24.12-16.34

Rebooting in recovery mode, choosing the 'recover X' option and then continuing gets us back to nv, but no 3D of course. Using sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg also restores the screen using nv but with low resolution - typically 800x600

Any thoughts, folks?

All the best, Ben
