Default inittab driver problems?

Ok to install the driver I had to edit the inttab file to get it init 3 (no X server right) so I do that and install the drivers. they install fine and I edit the XF86Config file as the readme on nvidias site dictated. Then I save. Then I go back to the inittab file and change it back to init 5. I save and reboot. As it's booting it says that it's entering INIT 5. Well is it? IT just gives me the plain old non X server login. Where did I go wrong? How can I get into the gui and not the basic text console? Also I wanted to have a refresh rate of 85 so in the XF86Config file I said under my monitor settings to have the lowest hor at 85 and lowest vert at 100. Is this the best way to set the refresh rate?

This is a VERY bad way to do it. You'll need to change these values to the values appropriate for your monitor. Visit your vendor's website and change the hsync and vrefresh values in your XF86Config file to the ones that they say your monitor will support. X will automatically pick the best mode for you when it starts. If you'd like to force a specific refresh rate, you'll need to use a modeline configuration tool ('gtf', for example) to write one.
