Default Please help me with RAID 0 setup

I'd like to use RAID 0 on my 2nd PC; I have 2 WD 40gb's laying around. They're 7200rpm but with a wimpy 2mb cache. They are nice and quiet though especially compared with my 2 Maxtor Diamondmax 9's in my media pc.

This pc will use my college-issued copy of XP.

Mobo: Asus A8V Deluxe with onboard Promise controller, same as my media PC.

I have to have a floppy hooked up, and have to use the makedisc utility supplied in the Asus driver disc to put the RAID drivers on it.

That has been done. Reading the floppy on my vista media pc shows that the files have been correctly copied.

So now I hook floppy up to other mobo, put XP disc in and boot with the boot order correctly established.

PROBLEM: I have a usb keyboard; 2 of them. NO PS2 keyboards in this house; I accidentally threw my backup keyboard out last fall. Sooo... when it says "Hit f6 to install 3rd party RAID driver" it won't register any of my key mashing.. UNTIL XP installs its usb drivers...

THEN, since no HD's are hooked up to the primary or secondary channels, XP says "hey, no HD's are recognized, do you have a disc that has an alternate driver?"

I think this is offering me the same opportunity as when I was supposed to hit f6.

SO, I hit "S" or whatever it asks me to hit to install a 3rd party driver and it says IMMEDIATELY without reading the floppy that "there is no applicable file on the disc".

wtf?

Man, every time I wanna set up RAID 0 it's a hassle.

Any help/suggestions? Please?

Well, you need to go into your bios and turn on USB support. I'm not exactly sure what it is called, but it allows you to use a USB keyboard in DOS.
EDIT: It's under Advanced > Chipset > USB configuration. Make sure Legacy USB support is enabled. It's also on page 4-23 in your manual if you can't find the setting.

The simpliest way though is to use Nlite and slipstream the drivers into your install cd, that way you don't have to add them via the floppy.

Re: Nlite: I don't have any CD-R's around, only a humongous stack of recordable dvd's... will those work?

Any other suggestions?

As long as it has a DVD drive it will work. It will just have more free space on the disc is all.

Apart from getting a USB to PS2 adpater, I think Bman's plan is a go.

I'll also say, be patient, I remember setting up the RAID on my PC, it was a real pain. Even with Vista's ability to read RAID drivers off a USB stick.

I just can't believe the machine wouldn't read the damn floppy. I mean that's all I needed...

Oh well, now this has me considering using my other choices of OS's I have laying around here (MSDN and college generosity FTW)... Media Center 2005 or XP 64. The machine will be used formedia management, dx9 gaming @ 10x7 and web surfing.

MCE 2005 would be ideal. I'm considering ditching my dedicated HDTV STB and just getting a AMD mboard with HDMI, a low heat CPU and a HDTV tuner card to use with Vista Media Centre.

bman: nlite is working pretty good. I'm making a nice custom MCE2k5 install disc with my RAID driver in it.

Thanks.
