If you want to use them temporarily, just copy the image url of the smiley and paste it with img tags. And no, bigger pics don't help. Since gifs are just pixels (not vector graphics like flash) they don't scale. If you start with an 800x800 picture and shrink it down to 50x50, its going to look like crap. More complicated pictures look worse than simple ones when you shrink them down.
