My 8800GTX can run most every game I have at 2560x1600 with full effects. Only with Crysis do I have to scale back some (and only some) of the effects to make it playable. And since I haven't touched Crysis in a couple of months...

I think I'll be waiting for the fall/winter refresh, and grab a new card along with one of the new Nehelam CPUs.

I am more happy for my GX2 now then ever its the best and fastest card out there.
i ordered a 280 but canceled it after the rewievs.

This is on early unoptimized drivers, just imagine what will happen after the drivers get better for the GTX 280.

Nvidias fault really for having too many cards competing with each other. Drivers should be optimized before the card comes out.

I don't think it is unreasonble to ask a premium price when you have a 1.4 billion transistor count chip based on 65nm die. You are not going to get any where near as many cores on a 300mm wafer as you did when you were making your 800 billion transistor 8800's on the same 65nm die.

I am having a hard time deciding what to do. The geek in me says use the step-up. It's only $38. But the benchmarks just are not making me want to pull the trigger.

For only $38 I would do it. Dont base these early benchmarks on the potential of the GTX 280 as it will get much better after a couple of driver revisions.

$38 will get you a card with more usable ram, a wider bus and you will lose the need for SLI profiles.

If you're stepping up, the question is; will there be a better alternative before your step-up runs out? Unless you waste your step-up and go for the X2 if it's worth it. If not you might as well go for the GTX

IMO I would step up because it will be a better decision in the long run. At the present time their might not be as many games where the 512MB framebuffer is overrun but if you keep the card for a year we could see more titles like alan wake that could struggle with higher resolutions.

Here is my favorite benchie.

Doing okay, but already slower than a GTX 280

Pcper's article really shows when AA is applied the GX2 can't hold up to the GTX 280. Without AA the GX2 is usually faster or about equal.
